I don’t normally post reviews on equipment but I have a few things in my camera bag that deserve a bit of recognition. One of those items is the Mag Mod Grid created by Spencer Boerup. I first discovered Spencer’s work through Keith Lee Studios in St. Louis and as I began to admire Keith and Spencer’s work I also came across other fantastic photographer Tony Hoffer. Between the three of these professionals I stumbled upon Spencer’s invention, the Mag Mod. The Mag Mod has become a valuable tool for me in properly shaping light and has been instrumental in some of my more recent portraits. As I continue to educate myself on avoiding spill and other flash missteps, I find the Mag Mod to be one of my favorite light accessories. I have very little negative things to say about this grid but I will note that you do have to be a tough little cookie to get the mod onto your flash (especially wider units like my Nikon SB-900’s). I have found that they work better on some of my smaller units but once the Mag Mod is secure using it is fairly quick and simple. I have attached a few of my more recent images created with the Mag Mod. We hope to share with you some images in 2015 that we will create with the Mag Mod as we continue to grow and improve. I look forward to working more with the gels that accompany the Mag Mod as well. You can check out the Mag Mod and other great products at their website here.
